This was the Overland Trek in Tasmania. We kicked off the trip by staying at a ranch estate in Launceston. Who would've known we would be playing golf in Tasmania! The trek was comprised of a hut - to - hut adventure spanning about 65 miles over the course of almost 6 days. The terrain was incredible changing from highlands to low grasslands to rain forest. The best part is that leaches tend to thrive in this place... Probably pulled off about 50 of the little buggers. Cradle Mountain Huts guided the trip and did an excellent job!
Day #1 hike
We hiked a little over 13.5 km with a total elevation gain of 4748ft. After spending about 6 hours on the trail, we were treated with Wallaby snags and cream of mushroom soup. The word of the day was mankey (means dirty).
Day #2 hike
Total distance covered was 17.23km with a total elevation gain of 1806 ft. The weather was a bit rainy and we traveled to Will's lake with the last part of the day through the "Enchanged Forest". Great day, but we all definitely knackered (Australian definition - too tired for sex). Our guide was outside cooling off with about 500 pull-ups and inverted crunches...
Day # 3 hike
Total distance covered was 21.5km with an elevation gain of over 6000ft. We hiked to Mt. Oakleigh and summited the peak. Today was the day of the leach. Nobody was safe... I didn't know leaches could get into so many places. I pulled a least 50 off over the day... traveler tip: put a little Purell on em and they fall right off. Todays word was fair dinkim (authentic or as an expression meaning "for real?")
Day # 4 hike
Total distance covered was 15.2km. This was another incredible day of hiking. Today, we summited the highest peak in Tasmania, Mt. Ossa. The hike was a bunch of bouldering to get to the top. It wasn't great in the wet weather, but everybody made it up in one piece. Word of the day was Drongo (idiot)... I remember hearing it yelled as we were jumping up the mountain.
Day #5
Total distance covered was 18.2km. Today, we walked through the rainforest which was home to trees 1500 years old. We saw 2 big waterfalls and were blown away by the diversity of the landscape! Word of the day was whinging (complain).
Day # 6
Total hiking distance was 12.1km. This was our final day of hiking and we made our way to the boat. We were picked up and boated across Lake St. Clare to our van back. There was plenty of wine consumed ... great trip!
We booked this trip through REI. This was a hut to hut hike. We carried only our gear and the huts were outfitted with food and drink!. Look for Cradle Mountain Huts.
